opening with three drawers, decorated with a frieze of vases alternating with laurel garlands and medallions depicting mythological figures, the sides centred with medallions with Vestal Virgins, the top inlaid with a similar decoration

The neoclassical decoration of the present pair of commodes relates it closely to productions from the circle of Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), the celebrated Intarsiatore delle Altezze Reali, who worked for the great Lombard families of the late eighteenth century and was notably involved in the furnishing projects of the Palazzo Ducale in Milan and the Villa Reale in Monza. A commode preserved at the Villa Reale in Milan displays an identical marquetry decoration to that of the present pair (see C. Steiner, Mobili e Ambienti Italiani, dal gotico al floreale, vol. II, Milan, 1963, no. 423).
