With the graceful curve of its lines and its gilt-bronze ornamentation, this bureau de pente highlights the genius of Christophe Wolff. A German-born cabinetmaker based on Rue Neuve-Saint-Denis, Wolff was renowned for his rich, exuberant floral marquetry, exemplified by the design adorning this desk.
These same motifs, particularly the central basket of flowers, appear on other works by the cabinetmaker, notably a stamped table sold at Christie's, New York, on 22 May 2002, lot 478, and again on 21-22 October 2010, lot 232.
It is highly probable that Christophe Wolff also produced marquetry panels to meet demand, supplying them to numerous cabinetmaking workshops, such as that of Pierre Roussel.
