Description

NIKE, NIKE MARATHON, SIZE 12.5

Nylon, Leather, Suede, Rubber

Circa 1970s

This vintage pair of Nike Marathon running shoes is finished in blue nylon with suede toeboxes and heels, featuring white leather Swooshes, and remains in deadstock condition. The pair comes with its original Nike box. The tongues are tagged with the original lowercase cursive Nike logo, absent a registered trademark symbol. The shoes were manufactured in Japan. White outsoles are stamped “Nike” and “Made in Japan,” while the blue Spenco insoles retain their original size and “Made in Japan” stickers.

The Nike Marathon was one of the brand’s first running shoes, designed as a lightweight racing flat suitable for roads, cross country, and indoor use. An early Nike catalog describes the model as combining weather-resistant Swooshfiber uppers with a condo-rubber racing sole, a built-in Spenco insole for comfort and blister protection, and a polyfoam arch bandage for instep support. Introduced in 1972, the Marathon was worn by the first American finisher in that year’s Boston Marathon, helping establish Nike as a leading brand in long-distance running.
