Description
rectangular with rounded corners, the lid chased with Minerva, Justice, and Venus, within a raised border, on a polished gold ground, flanked by the coat-of-arms of Oldham above motto 'sapere aude' ('dare to be wise') to the left and engraved crossed fasces to the right, further engraved with a date: 28th Nov. 1820, the sides and base with chevron engine-turning, fully hallmarked,

The symbolism and engraving on the cover of the present lot is intriguing and may relate to the 1820 Oldham Inquest which looked into the death of John Lees who received sabre wounds during the Peterloo Massacre at St Peter's Field, Manchester in 1819.
