The composition is partly based on a Portrait of a Man in Armour by Sir Anthony van Dyck (see S. J. Barnes, N. De Poorter, O. Millar and H. Vey, Van Dyck. A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven and London 2004, p. 220, no. II.89, as Whereabouts unknow). Another portrait by the artist, identified as the Prefect Raffaele Raggi, is at the National Gallery in New York (inv. 1942.9.90).

La composition reprend en partie un Portrait d'homme en armure de Sir Anthony van Dyck (voir S. J. Barnes, N. De Poorter, O. Millar et H. Vey, Van Dyck. A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven et Londres, 2004, p. 220, n° II.89, avec une localisation inconnue). Un autre portrait de l'artiste, identifié comme étant le préfet Raffaele Raggi, est conservé à la National Gallery à New York (inv. 1942.9.90).
