This intriguing portrait of a young man appears at present to elude any attempt at attribution. The vigorous and heavily laden brushstroke might have suggested Jan Cossiers: indeed the treatment of the white collar bears similarities in its treatment to that worn by the model in Portrait of an unknown man, now in the Rubenshuis in Antwerp (inv. no. RH.S.222).

However, this attribution is not entirely convincing and it seems our painting must remain anonymous. It is nevertheless precisely datable, thanks to the panel-maker’s mark on the rear: the letters FDB are the initials of the panel-maker François de Bout, active in Antwerp between 1637 and 1643.

Cet intriguant portrait de jeune homme semble devoir échapper pour le moment à toute attribution. Le pinceau apposant avec vigueur une matière généreuse, a pu faire penser à la main de Jan Cossiers : le traitement de la collerette blanche se rapproche en effet de celui de la collerette portée par le modèle du Portrait d’un homme inconnu, aujourd’hui conservé à la Rubenshuis à Anvers (inv. RH.S.222).

Cette attribution n’est toutefois pas complètement convaincante, et notre tableau semble devoir rester anonyme. Il est cependant précisément datable, grâce à la marque de panneleur apposée au dos : les lettres FDB sont en effet celles du fabricant de panneau François de Bout, actif à Anvers entre 1637 et 1643…
