Executed by an artist working in the circle of Andrea Sacchi, the present painting is one of many paintings, sketches, and prints after the artist's popular rendition. Executed in 1631 for the Church of the Camaldolese of San Antonio, Rome, the autograph original is today in the Pinacoteca Vaticana. The present painting may correspond with a work described in the 1653 inventory of Cardinal Mazarin's collection.
