Description

of rococo heart shape, formed of filigree scrollwork and beads within a ropework border, one side centered by a rectangular plaque engraved G-d, the other with matching panel engraved in Hebrew, topped by a pierced granulated disc with gold suspension ring, the disc struck with unclear mark possibly a French control mark

Bergel family of Gibraltar, descended in the family

Yomtob Bergel (1812-1894), “el nino de oro” one of the wealthiest merchants in Gibraltar, president of the Hebrew Community, reorganized the Hebrew Poor Fund, one of the first members of the Sanitary Commission, a member of the Exchange Committee, active in the Relief Fund during the cholera epidemic in 1865

To Moses and Rebecca Bergel, Moses (b. 1854), merchant and consul of Belgium in Gibraltar

A comparable gold filigree amulet is in the collection of the Jewish Museum London, JM610, and is featured on the cover of the catalogue, Treasures of Jewish Heritage, The Jewish Museum London, 2006, description, p. 69.


A pair of Dutch Torah Finials by the well- known Pieter van Hoven 1710 were given to the Shaar Hashamayim Synagogue in Gibraltar and inscribed”in Memory of the late Avraham Abergel and his late wife” This probably refers to Rev.Abraham Haim (A)Bergel, son of Zadik(holy man) Isaac Bergel, godfather and probably grandfather of Yomtob Bergel, wealthy merchant of Gibraltar and father of Moses( see portrait) Sotheby’s , New York, 15 December , 2010 lot 63.
