Ink and gouache on paper (323 x 250 mm), signed "Bemelmans" (lower center), and annotated "12" (upper right); paper very lightly toned, unframed.


A charming portrait of the beloved French schoolgirl, first introduced to the world in Madeline (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1939).


PROVENANCE:

Private Collection, New York (purportedly a gift from the artist) — by descent to an undesignated consignor (Doyle, New York, 9 October 2024, lot 643)
