Preparatory sketch of Pepito riding a giraffe for Madeline and the Bad Hat
Graphite, ink, and crayon on paper (16 x 13 inches, sight). Signed "Bemelmans" (lower center), matted, framed, and glazed, original Hammer Galleries label retained on verso of frame; paper lightly rumpled with faint mat burn, pin point hole to back leg of giraffe, not examined out of frame.

A preparatory sketch for Madeline and the Bad Hat (New York: Viking Press, 1956) depicting Pepito riding a giraffe at the zoo. This image that was omitted from the published story in lieu of the young boy with interacting with birds, and a kangaroo, elephant, and lion. Bemelmans has annotated the image with several lines of text, including the published verse ("His love of animals was such, | Even Miss Clavel said, | "It's too much!") and unpublished alternatives ("His love of animals was such — he proved it one day at the zoo" and "At lengths | Feats of prodigious strengths").
