RUPERT DE DEUTZ. R. Domini, D. Ruperti, Abbatis Monasterii Tuitiensis, Ordinis D. Benedicti, Viri longe doctissimi, summique, inter veteres, theologi, quotquot hactenus haberi potuerunt, Opera Omnia. Ante CCCCLXX annos conscripta, nunc in unum corpus collecta, et in duos tomos divisa, auctiores quam antea [part 2:] … Operum, Tomus Secundus. Quae ante CCCCLXX annos conscripta sunt, nunc vero auctiora prodeunt. Cologne: heirs of Arnold I Birckmann for Arnold Mylius, 1602
An unusual Spanish fore-edge decoration, with the title in cartouches and with a rat and a monkey drawn at the head of each volume.
2 volumes, folio (330 x 215mm). Roman and italic types, double column. collation: *6 A–4P6 4Q4: 514 leaves; A8 B–4P6 4Q–R4 4S6: 520 leaves. Woodcut printer’s device. (Browned throughout, a few wormholes.)
binding: Contemporary Spanish limp vellum (335 x 244 mm), slight fore-edge flaps, traces of 2 pairs of ties, spine with 4 bands, title lettered on spine "Ruperti, Opera", fore-edges elaborately decorated in brown ink, undoubtedly in very early seventeenth-century Spain, volume 1: at top a monkey on a chain, title within an elaborate architectonic cartouche "RVPERTI/ABBATIS/OPERVM/TOMUS.IUS", at foot possibly several flowers in bloom or a cluster of apples; volume 2: at top a rat, title within different architectonic cartouche, at foot a cluster of apples. (The binding worn and soiled, new pastedowns, volume 2 spine defective at foot with crude repair.)
provenance: Elaborate fore-edge decoration in brown ink incorporating animals and fruit, presumably from an institutional library — Henry Robert Lloyd (1809-1880), black inkstamp — Edward Cyril Simpson (1894-1979, librarian at John Rylands Library), bookplate — sale, Bloomsbury Book Auctions, London, 8 July 2010, lot 302 — Reiss & Sohn, Auktion 138: Wertvolle Bücher, Handschriften, Königstein, 26-27 October 2010, lot 1163. acquisition: Purchased at the preceding sale. references: VD17 23:627812X; USTC 2052512 & 2039487
