LUCIANUS SAMOSATENSIS. Λουκιανου απαντα. Luciani Samosatensis opera, quae Graece extant, omnia, in duos tomos concinne digesta (-pars secunda). Basel: [Michael Isengrin], 1545
A good example of a Louvain panel-stamped binding. The title lettering on the fore-edge is not in manuscript, as one would expect, but has been stamped on using the same letters that are used for the owner's name on the cover (presumably not by the original binder but soon after its acquisition by Suffridus).
2 volumes, 8vo (170 x 108 mm). Greek type, 27 lines plus headline. collation: α A-Z a-z & *8; AA-ZZ aa-zz Aa-Dd8: 391 (of 392, without *8 blank) and 400 leaves. Woodcut printer's device on title-pages, woodcut initials. (Final leaf of volume 1 with small tear.)
binding: Contemporary Louvain panel-stamped calf by Jacob Bathen (177 x 123 mm), covers with Spes panel stamp signed IB at lower left corner, first volume with ownership lettering SUM SUF stamped (later) at head of upper cover, spines with later paper lettering-pieces, yellow(?) edges with title stamped across fore-edges. (Small repairs to ends of joints and spine, bindings slightly rubbed, upper joint of volume 1 weak.)
provenance: Suffridus Joannes of Kollum, Brabant, name on binding, presentation inscription from Tarquinus Buvema dated July 1563 on flyleaf of volume 1, and inscription on inside cover of volume 2 — Greek phrase "Σπευδε χαρισι" on inside cover of volume 2 — Antonius Lambergius of Gröningen, seventeenth-century inscription on title-page — Martin Breslauer Inc., catalogue 110 (New York, 1992), item 34. acquisition: Purchased in 1992 from Martin Breslauer Inc., New York. references: VD16 L 2921
