A rare kawari kabuto [eccentrically shaped helmet] in the form of a tengu

Edo period, 18th - 19th century


the variously sized nine-plate iron bowl with chrysanthemum form rivets, the russet iron peak in the form of a tengu's beak, hammered and chiselled furrowed brow, the iron with a fine patination, the black lacquer turnbacks decorated in gold hiramaki-e with sakura mon [cherry blossom crests], four-tiered neck guard with spaced lacing in dark blue braid


The bowl to peak: 30.5 cm., 12 in.
