The Property of a Gentleman

A katana

Attributed to the Yamato Tegai school

Kamakura – Nambokucho period, 13th – 14th century


Sugata [configuration]: shinogi zukuri, iori-mune, tori-zori, chu-kissaki

Kitae [forging pattern]: flowing itame mixed with mokume in places

Hamon [tempering pattern]: narrow suguha in nie-deki, relatively wide nioiguchi, much sunagashi and kinsuji

Boshi [tip]: rounded small maru boshi with short turnback

Horimono [carvings]: each side with deep single groove

Nakago [tang]: o-suriage , kiri, horizontal file markings, three mekugi-ana, unsigned

Habaki [collar]: copper-gilt, single clad

In shirasaya plain wood scabbard]

Koshirae [mount]: ribbed black lacquer kizami saya, shakudo fittings, the fuchi carved with reeds, the kashira with Daruma, the shakudo and gilt menuki in the form of various accoutrements for tea, the circular iron tsuba pierced and carved with a profusion of chrysanthemums, Showa period, 20th century

Nagasa [length from kissaki to machi]: 70.9 cm., 27⅞ in.

Saki-haba [width at the yokote]: 2.1 cm., ⅞ in.

Moto-haba [width at the machi]: 3.1 cm., 1¼ in.


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Hozon Token [Sword Especially Worthy of Preservation], no. 154859 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated Heisei 22 (2010).
