Description

Maria Luigia Raggi

Genoa 1742 - 1813

A pair of imaginary landscapes, one with a river the other with a stream, both with ruins, large trees and figures in the foreground

Both tempera on parchment laid on canvas, on a wooden stretcher;

numbered in black chalk on the backing canvas:17 and 18

tempera on parchment laid on canvas

Each circa 510 by 740 mm

(2)

This pair of large-scale ideal views are more broadly and quickly painted than Raggi's smaller capricci, such as the pair in the previous lot.  Gaspar van Wittel's use of tempera, as well as depiction of figures within sumptuous natural sceneries, exerted a decisive influence on Raggi's artistic production as did the work and personality of Marco Ricci.
