Circle of Niccolo Roccatagliata (Genoa 1593 - 1636 Venice)

Italian, Venice, circa 1600

Pair of finials in the form of putti astride rearing griffins

bronze, on modern bronzed bases

bronzes: 15.5cm., 6 1/8 in. each

bases: 7cm., 2¾in.

With Paolo Brisigotti, London, 1978

This charming pair of putti astride griffins are characteristic works of late 16th and early 17th-century Venetian bronze workshops. The present models compare closely to a putto riding a lion attributed to Niccolo Roccatagliata (1593–1636) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, illustrated by Planiscig (op. cit., fig. 674). Roccatagliata and his workshop produced several versions of seated and finial-type putti. The similar treatment of the putti’s faces with prominent foreheads, soft curling hair, and the overall composition of the figures associate the present pair to Roccatagliata's workshop or circle.
