This finely preserved, large sheet is a handsome survival of a 16th-century Italian architectural drawing, of a type only rarely seen on the market. The old attribution to Bramante reflects the inspiration, apparent in this drawing, of his design for the Tempietto of San Pietro in Montorio, which dates to the first decade of the 16th century. Bramante's design and the resultant building in Rome received much critical acclaim, and directly or indirectly influenced many subsequent architectural works.
Though this design differs from Bramante's in several important ways, most notably in the exquisite dolphins that feature on the dome, finely drawn in confident pen and brown ink, the influence of Bramante can none the less be keenly felt throughout this accomplished sheet.
