This magnificent bouquet of flowers is typical of the work of Jean-Michel Picart, whose paintings were widely collected in the second half of the seventeenth century: many of them can now be found in public collections, for example at Versailles and the Château de Marly.

Born in Antwerp in 1600, Picart probably trained in the Francken family workshop, where he may also have been influenced by the works of artists such as Jacob von Hulsdonck and Jacob van Es. He settled in Paris in 1635 and joined a group of Flemish artists in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Just like Garnier and Moillon, he was not only a painter but also a picture dealer.

Skillfully lit, the flowers in this ravishing bouquet contrast with the superbly painted vase that contains them. The floral composition is arranged gracefully and naturally, emphasising the fleeting nature of this delicate and perishable subject. The fragility, elusiveness and instability of this natural beauty assembled by a human hand is symbolized and accentuated by the petals that have fallen at the foot of the vase and especially the magnificent butterfly resting on a stalk, balancing on the edge of the table.
