Ron Arad: the power of form

Since the early 1980s, Ron Arad has been shaking up the design scene by placing experimentation with the possibilities offered by metal and new techniques at the heart of his work. "No Discipline" was the title he chose for his first retrospective at the Centre Pompidou and then at MoMA in 2008 and 2009. "I like the title because it reflects the temperament of my work, which doesn't fit into any specific discipline. It's not architecture or design or art, it's everything at once" (1).

The Ron Arad creations presented here are among the designer's major pieces: the No Voïd armchair, the Big Easy armchairs, the RTW bookcase, the Oh Voïd 2 chair and the Two legs and a table coffee table.

These are all creations that play on formal ambiguities, the interplay of materials, reflections, proportions and balance. Works that are both furniture and sculpture, celebrating the beauty of metal and carbon fibre.

Depuis le début des années 1980, Ron Arad bouleverse la scène du design en plaçant l’expérimentation autour des possibilités offertes par le métal et les techniques nouvelles au cœur de son travail. « No Discipline ! » est le titre qu’il avait choisi pour sa première rétrospective au Centre Pompidou puis au MoMa en 2008 et 2009. « : « J'aime ce titre, car il reflète le tempérament de mon travail, qui ne s'inscrit pas dans une discipline spécifique. Ce n'est ni de l'architecture ni du design ou de l'art, c'est tout cela à la fois » (1).

Les créations de Ron Arad que nous présentons ici comptent parmi les pièces majeures du designer : fauteuil No Voïd, fauteuils Big Easy, bibliothèque RTW, chaise Oh Voïd 2 ou encore table basse Two legs and a table.

Autant de créations qui jouent des ambiguïtés formelles, des jeux de matières, des reflets, des proportions ou encore des jeux d’équilibre. Des œuvres, meubles et sculptures à la fois, qui célèbrent la beauté du métal ou encore de la fibre de carbone.
