Long remained in the shadow, Daniel Roth is one of the brightest watchmakers of the 20th century.

After finishing his watchmaking studies, he worked for Audemars Piguet for seven years. In 1975, he then met the Chaumet brothers, Jacques and Pierre, who decided to give him the enormous task of restoring the name of the most celebrated watchmaker of all times: Breguet.

Roth spent considerable time to study the techniques and art of the master and came up with new timepieces under the Classique collection. Notable models would include the tourbillon and the perpetual calendar for example.

In 1988, he finally founded his eponymous company with the aim of producing extremely high-quality pieces, with extremely high attention to each of the components, in low quantities and addressed to connoisseurs.

To mark the debut of his production, he unveiled a new shape for the case, the now famous double ellipse. The first series, produced between 1990 and 1994 are the most collectible and sought-after by collectors as they express the very spirit of the brand, at a time when Roth would work and share his knowledge and passion with a dozen of employees only. Amongst these models, there was the chronograph C147, the tourbillon C187 and the time only C107, such as the present lot.

The C107 was equipped with the calibre Frederic Piguet 71, an ultra thin automatic movement with an off-center rotor, which Roth also used during his time at Breguet. The movement was very nicely finished and the rotor was guilloché. The case was constructed in a traditional way and included a pin to perfectly fit the case back to the main case. The dial had many intricate details with a variety of patterns and layers creating endless variations depending on the light. The arrow-shaped hands are reminiscent of the English watches.

These early models solely displayed the Daniel Roth name and their unique number, similarly to Breguet. This example, one of the very first C107 made, bears the number 3 on the dial at 6 o’clock. It is also present on the case back and the movement, confirming that these different pieces match.

While most of these early pieces were usually made in yellow gold with a silvered dial, the present lot differs by being cased in white gold and fitted with a black dial with contrasting white Roman indexes.

This C107 no. 3, is not only a testimony of the early production of one of the first and most important independent watchmakers, its black and white livery provides incredible charisma to this highly collectible timepiece.
