The Day-Date is arguably one of Rolex's most iconic models, and worn by both some of the coolest and most influential figures in history. This example is a slightly more contemporary iteration; the reference 18238, and with its S serial it can be dated to around 1993. Aesthetically not much has changed since the model was first introduced in 1956, testament to its timeless character, though this particular timepiece features diamond-set indexes offering it a somewhat more glamourous appearance.
The Reference 18238 was introduced in 1988 and marked the most important improvement brought to the Day Date: for the first time the watch had the double quick set function. Indeed, the reference was equipped with the Calibre 3155, which allowed the date and the day to be set quickly and independently. This innovation greatly improved the practicality of the watch and made the model enter to the modern era.
The 18238 was eventually discontinued in 2000 and has been since then among the most collectible Day Date as it combines historical importance, extremely user friendly experience, comfort on the wrist as well as a vast catalogue of different dials.
This present lot, as an example, has a most attractive mother-of-pearl dial with diamond-set indexes and the correct non-luminescent hands. This very versatile dial is beautifully complemented by the case retaining most attractive proportions. It represents a great opportunity to acquire an iconic reference of an iconic model with a rare combination.
