At the 2007 edition of Baseworld Rolex launched its new Datejsut Special Edition Black Royal. The incredible dial was reminiscent of a zebra's black and white (diamond-set) stripes. The bezel was embellished with calibrated black sapphires and small diamonds to its edge. The white gold case had diamond-set hooded lugs. This very impressive watch was complemented by an incredible black diamond-set rubber strap.
The original version was the 116199SANR, like the present lot, in white gold with the black sapphire bezel. Later on came the white gold version, non diamond-set hooded lugs and diamond-set bezel instead of black sapphire named 116189BBR, as well as a pink gold version also with a diamond-set bezel and plain hooded lugs, the reference 116185BBR. All the versions came out of the Rolex catalogue a few years after entering it and are now extremely rare pieces to come across.
With the Leopard and the Tiger patterns, both used on the Daytona, the Datejust Zebra completes the trilogy of the wildest Rolex watches.
