3 vols., folio (505 x 375 mm) half-titles, 141 plates, mostly colored; scattered fingersoiling, some plates toned. Three-quarter green morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, top edges gilt, ornate patterned endpapers; joints rubbed, covers scuffed. 


First edition, published simultaneously in London and Berlin. Based on the results of the detailed and meticulous excavations carried out by Reiss and Stubel at Ancon (near Lima) in 1875. The plates illustrate the necropolis itself; garments and textiles; ornaments, utensils and toys; the evolution of ornament and design; plants and fruits; anthropology and mammals.
