A jewelled parcel-gilt silver-mounted rock crystal cup, Germany, circa 1670
the oval-shaped rock crystal bowl engraved with flowers and reeds, mounted with a leaf tip engraved silver-gilt rim and a cast affronté dolphin handle, the stem, formed as a parcel-gilt Moorish figure, raised on a rock crystal base, its silver-gilt foot rim engraved with foliate scrolls and set with cameos, coloured stones and pastes

In the German lands in the seventeenth century there was a fashion for standing cups with figural stems. While many were made entirely of silver or silver-gilt, some incorporated other materials - such as hardstone, shells, coconuts and rhinoceros horn - with silver being used only for the mounts. These mounts were often set with coloured stones, cameos or small enamelled elements that further enriched the effect. The present standing cup is an example of this taste. The use of a moorish figure, an allusion to the exotic, is also very much in keeping with the period.
