An Important Louis XVI Silver-Gilt Salver from the Royal Portuguese Service, Robert-Joseph Auguste, Paris, 1784

hexafoil, with raised ribbon-bound running laurel rim, the center engraved with the Royal Arms of Portugal in a shield hung with swags and enclosed by military emblems - crossed cannon, flags held by spears- and spreading foliage, all within a circular ribbon, on three leafy scroll feet, marked on back rim, with maker’s mark, Paris charge mark 1783-89, maison commune for 1784, the rim with the Paris ewer export mark for 1781-89, with later fitted box

Robert-Joseph Auguste registered his mark in January 1757, sponsored by Joseph Vallayer. Two years later he made a pair of gold salts for Mme de Pompadour to a model by Falconet, and quickly gained a major reputation. In 1778 he became goldsmith in ordinary to the King. From 1784 he occupied an apartment and office in the Louvre, previously occupied by Jacques Roettiers. He supplied silver to the courts of St. Petersburg, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Lisbon. He was joined by his son, Henry, master in 1785 who continued after his father, who died in 1805.
