Description

Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, written in naskh in black, green and red ink, with names in gold and green concentric illuminated circles and gold illuminated roundels, the opening backed with green silk, in modern brown leather case

1151 by 27.5cm.

Silsilename are genealogies which were popular in Ottoman Turkey, listing rulers and religious leaders and their line of descent. Their popularity in the Ottoman empire had dual importance, both in terms of chronicling history as well as legitimising the Ottoman rule (Taner 2018, p.146).

In this example, the scroll commences with the Adam, tracing the lineage through the Prophets of Islam and the following dynasties up until the Ottomans, ending with Mustafa III (r.1757-74). A silsilename scroll recently sold in these Rooms, 30 March 2022, lot 29.
