Marguerite Pierre

"Mexique et Perou," manuscript volume containing original drawings of archaeological subjects and artifacts. [Nd, but ca. 1850]

Folio (346 x 265 mm), 60 pages (rectos only), with 14 original drawings executed in ink, pencil, or watercolor, title-page hand-lettered in gilt, and 15 pages of manuscript descriptions with accompanying ink and pencil initials and decorative borders; tissue guards throughout, very minor spotting. Contemporary morocco-backed pebble cloth, silk endpapers, all edges gilt, "M P" stamped in gilt on front cover; cloth faded and lightly discolored.

An attractive manuscript work on Mexican and Peruvian archaeological subjects, with original drawings

The drawings range widely in subject. In additional to archeological subjects (pyramids, stone figures, carvings of divinities, ceramic arts), the present volume also contains portraits of Columbus, Cortez, and Pizarro, and handsome partially colored maps of North and South America. The accompanying text, accomplished beautifully in French, describes the subjects shown in the drawings, as well as Mexican mineral wealth, flora and fauna, and more.
