According to the inscription, this hawk bell belonged to the last Maharaja of Punjab, Duleep Singh. This monarch, born on September 4, 1838, became with time a romantic figure in the history of the empire that dominated the Indian subcontinent. Forced into exile as a child, after being deprived of his rights to the throne by the British Crown, he became an enigmatic personality with an anxious and unstable temperament. He lived in the United Kingdom like a bird in a golden cage and died on October 22, 1893, in the country that deprived him of his throne. This hawk bell is a vestige of the prince's physical attachment and the anxiety that any loss could bring him. He was particularly thoughtful of his falcons and spent hours observing them flying freely in the castle lent by the Crown near Whitby. The prince lived there from 1858 to 1863. The inscription describing the falcon return can be interpreted as a metaphor for his wish to return to the homeland he never got to see again.

Ce grelot, d’après l’inscription, a appartenu au dernier Maharaja du Pendjab, Duleep Singh. Ce monarque, né le 4 septembre 1838, est devenu au fils du temps une figure romantique dans l'histoire de l’empire qui a dominé le subcontinent indien. Contraint à l’exil alors qu’il était encore un enfant, après avoir été privé de ses droits au trône par la Couronne britannique, il est devenu une personnalité énigmatique dotée d’un tempérament anxieux et instable. Il continuera sa vie au Royaume-Uni comme un oiseau dans une cage dorée, et mourra le 22 octobre 1893 dans ce pays qui l’avait privé de son trône. Ce grelot est donc un vestige de son attachement matériel et des angoisses que toute perte pouvait lui procurer. Il attachait un soin particulier à ses faucons et passait beaucoup de temps à les observer volant librement dans le château prêté par la Couronne près de Whitby. Le prince y vécut de 1858 à 1863. L’inscription décrivant le retour du faucon peut être interprétée comme une métaphore de son souhait de retourner au pays natal qu’il n’a jamais pu revoir.
