Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder, son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, brother of Bernardus and father of Hermanus Junior and Willem, was central to the Koekkoek dynasty. After an apprenticeship with his father, Hermanus Koekkoek settled in Amsterdam, where he became a member of the Royal Academy in 1840 before being elected to the ‘Rotterdams Genootschap’ in 1841.

Heir to the painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Hermanus Koekkoek’s river paintings were clearly influenced by the works of Ruysdael. Koekkoek’s warm palette and fluid brushstroke nevertheless  differ from Ruysdael, placing him firmly within the context of Dutch Romanticism.

The present painting is a fine example: the sky bathed in a golden light, tinged with pink, evokes the warm atmosphere at the end of a peaceful day’s fishing with incomparable authenticity. There is no disruption to the landscape’s tranquillity from the calm, barely rippling waters, which reflect the landscape on the left and blend with the sky on the right, together contributing to the restful atmosphere. In the foreground, the fishermen work quietly, illustrating the Romantic ideal absorbed by the painters of this generation.

Hermanus Koekkoek l’Ancien, fils de Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, frère de Bernardus et père d’Hermanus Junior et Willem, est au cœur de la dynastie des Koekkoek. D’abord apprenti auprès de son père, Hermanus Koekkoek s’installe ensuite à Amsterdam, où il devient membre de l’Académie royale en 1840 avant d’être élu en 1841 au « Rotterdams Genootschap ».

Héritier des peintres de l’Âge d’Or hollandais, l’influence des œuvres de Ruysdael résonne évidemment dans ses paysages fluviaux. Koekkoek s’en distingue néanmoins par sa chaude palette et son pinceau fluide, l’inscrivant ainsi complètement dans le romantisme hollandais.

Notre présent tableau en est un bel exemple : le ciel aux reflets rosés, éclairé par une lumière dorée, transcrit avec une incomparable vérité la chaude atmosphère d’une fin de calme journée de pêche. La quiétude du paysage n’est ici pas perturbée par des eaux paisibles, ondulant à peine, reflétant le paysage à gauche et se confondant, à droite, avec le ciel, dans une même atmosphère sereine…Au premier-plan, les pêcheurs travaillent tranquillement, illustrant l’idéal romantique des peintres de cette génération.
