Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse studied sculpture with his father Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), and painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and with Cabanel. He exhibited at the Salon from 1870 onwards and turned to sculpture in 1889. Like his father, he worked as a modeller for porcelain, and became art director of the Choisy-le-Roi factory Hautin, Boulenger & Co, in 1890, one of the renown French earthenware factories established in 1804 by the Paillard brothers. The musée du Petit Palais owns several faience vases by Louis-Robert, such as the one entitled 'Struggle of Life' (inv. no. ODUT1945), circa 1884-1885, as well Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse famous Vase the Titans, in 1876, fruit of his collaboration with Auguste Rodin (Petit Palais, inv. no ODUT1914).
A similar example to the present vase was sold, Sotheby's, Paris, November 20, 2006, lot 31 (€18,000).
