Pair of finials in the form of putti astride rearing griffins

bronze, on modern bronzed bases

bronzes: 15.5cm., 6⅛in. each

bases: 7cm., 2¾in.

With Paolo Brisigotti, London, 1978
This charming pair of putti astride griffins are characteristic works of late 16th and early 17th-century Venetian bronze workshops.

The present models compare closely to a putto riding a lion attributed to Niccolò Roccatagliata (1593–1636) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (illustrated by Planiscig, op. cit., fig. 674). Roccatagliata and his workshop produced several versions of seated and finial-type putti. The similar treatment of the putti’s facial type and composition associate the present pair to Roccatagliata's workshop or circle.
