oil on canvas

unframed: 73.5 x 58.5 cm.; 29 x 23 in.

framed: 98 x 82.5 cm.; 38⅝ x 32½ in.

The canvas has a firm lining. The paint surface is very dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Frame abrasion is visible along the left margin. There are a handful of surface scratch marks and a number of small discoloured retouchings in the background and in her drapery. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this underneath the thick varnish and further reveals some scattered retouching in her headdress, a spot un the cockerel's crest (1 x 1 cm.). There also is an older campaign of small retouchings in the sitters face. The painting would benefit from cleaning and is in overall fairly good condition.
