signed Ben Nicholson, titled and inscribed (on the reverse); also signed Nicholson and inscribed with the artist's address (on the stretcher bar); further signed NICHOLSON and inscribed with the artist's address (on the inside of the frame)

pencil and oil on curved board, in the artist's wooden frame

overall: 54 by 47.5cm.; 21¼ by 18¾in.

Executed in 1949.

We are grateful to Lee Beard for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.

The board is inherently curved. The board is sound and is securely attached to the artist's made cradle and frame. The work appears to be in very good overall condition. There are inherent indentations and imperfections to the board. There is surface dirt, specks of matter and some spots of staining. There appear to be some spots of wax splatter in the lower portion of the composition. A small line of cracking in the upper right hand corner. Some surface abrasions and scratches, including in the lower right corner, some of which are in keeping with the artist's working practice. UV light inspection reveals no evidence of any retouching or restoration. Held in the artist's wooden frame with some scuffs and abrasions in places. There is some separation to the elements of the frame in the corners.
