The Old Bedford

signed Sickert. (lower right)

oil on artist's board

unframed: 39 by 31.5cm.; 15¼ by 14½in.

framed: 57.5 by 50cm.; 22¾ by 19¾in.

Executed 1897-98.

We are grateful to Wendy Baron for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.

The work is executed on a composite artist's board which has been laid down on to a secondary wooden board. The board is very slightly bowed. The work appears to be in very good overall condition. There are some nicks and minor losses to the extreme edges and corners. There appears to be some historic restoration to the lower-right and upper-left hand corners. Some rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. There appears to be an old horizontal crease approx. 7cm in length in the upper right-hand quadrant. There appears to be another very minor crease to the extreme upper left-hand edge. Some surface dirt and specks of matter. Ultraviolet light inspection reveals a discoloured layer of surface varnish. There is some retouching to the aforementioned crease in the upper right-hand quadrant. There is some retouching to what appears to be two further creases, one extending horizontally from the upper-right hand edge and the other running vertically in the upper-right hand quadrant. There is an area of flecked retouching to the lower right framing edge. There are some minor instances of flecked retouchings elsewhere. The work is presented in a gilt wooden frame with plaster mouldings.
