Another work of the same composition by Matthys Naiveu, A Man Reading in a Courtyard, which is signed and dated 1692, was sold at Sotheby's London on 12 July 1978 (lot 17).
Born in Leiden, Naiveu was a student of Gerrit Dou's and his paintings were heavily influenced by the work of his teacher until he moved to Amsterdam around 1678 and began to develop his own style, using rougher brushstrokes and a more colorful palette.
