L'artiste
‘Huddled Masses: No place like home is taken from a body of work entitled Post, that looks at Irish migration in the wake of the Industrial revolution. The artwork's title is taken from an inscription on the Statue of Liberty that called the world to a land of promise. However, upon arrival many of them, my family included, found themselves working in factories where they simply became another huddled mass. The embroidered silk represents the New World and its infinite possibilities, its decorative opulence is mass produced and is a counter point to the hand-made functional fabrics of the domestic spaces left behind in Ireland; like the home of my great grandmother illustrated within the wallpaper pattern.' Jennifer Trouton, April 2022.
Trouton recently exhibited in A Nation under the Influence: Ireland at 100 at the Irish Culture Centre Paris. The exhibition presented six Irish artists whose work references specific influences- religious, socio-economical and political, that Ireland is still dealing with 100 years after independence. Trouton's installation 'In Plain Sight' investigates the way in which objects and interiors can reflect and compound national and religious beliefs, in a domestic setting, which she seeks to subvert. 'In Plain Sight' considers the women impacted by societal and religious attempts to suppress reproductive rights in Ireland. Her work highlights how, regardless of continued attempts to reduce the influence and autonomy of women , women still access the tools necessary to control their own reproductive rights. In many cases they found the objects of their emancipation in the domestic space that were assigned them.
