An Israeli Silver Challah Plate and Tall Kiddush Cup, Wolpert, Jerusalem, Circa 1960


plain rectangular plate with up-cured ends, pierced with two line blessing in stylized Hebrew script, on four wood block feet, marked on base; the cup with conical bowl, vase-shaped stem and spreading foot applied with Hebrew blessings, marked on base rim, both with engraved presentation inscriptions


Length 14 ¼ in.; Height 7 ½ in.

On the Kiddush cup, the middle ring has the last few words of the blessing recited over wine (“Who creates the fruit of the vine”), while the base refers to “the nation that sanctifies the seventh day,” a phrase taken from the Shabbat morning prayers.

 

On the challah board, the inscription reads: “He has satisfied us with sustenance and provisions,” a phrase taken from one of the Shabbat table songs.


The inscription on the plate reads “This tray presented to Temple Beth Emunah in honor of the Fifty-second Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lazarus Jan 12 1909 Jan 12 1961 The cup is engraved “ Presented to Temple Beth Emunah in honor of the fifty-first Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lazarus 1 12 1909 1 12 60."
