An Iraqi Silver-Mounted Wood Torah Case, 1876


chased with a repeated pattern of floral sprays and inscribed with Hebrew presentation inscription, inner glass panels painted with flower heads and Hebrew inscription (one with crack), includes a pair of associated Torah finials

The interior inscriptions read: “This tik and the Torah scroll inside it are consecrated for the elevation of the soul of the noblewoman Señora Rachel, who died before her time, by her wise, understanding husband… Elijah Hazzan, may God keep and protect him, and his son, Señor Moses, may God keep and protect him. May the blessed God lengthen their days in happiness and their years in delight. So may it be His will, amen. [Dedicated] on 25 Kislev, in the year ‘Wealth and riches are in their house’ [1876] [see Ps. 112:3].” / “Therefore, write down this poem and teach it to the people of Israel” [Deut. 31:19].

 

The exterior inscription reads: “This tik and the Torah scroll inside it and the finials are consecrated for the elevation of the soul of the noblewoman Señora Rachel, by her wise, understanding husband… Elijah Hazzan, may God keep and protect him, and his son, Señor Moses”.


Both finials inscribed: “Consecrated by Mordechai Hayyim in memory of Ezra Saul”.
