RARE SPANISH LANGUAGE HIP HOP POSTER FEATURING MELLOW MAN ACE AND KID FROST

The Cuban-American rapper, Mellow Man Ace—an original member of DVX (Devastating Vocal Excellence)—is known as the "Godfather of Latin Rap." After releasing his debut album, Escape from Havana (1989), Ace was the first Latino artist to have a bilingual hit single ("Mentirosa" as indicated on the poster), subsequently releasing four albums in the span of a twenty-year career.

Latin rap pioneer Kid Frost started his career in 1982 by releasing early electro classics. His name was a tribute to rival Ice T, whom he often battled. He was also a breakdancer for Uncle Jamm’s Army. Kid Frost’s 1990 hit “La Raza”—from his debut album Hispanic Causing Panic—and was a breakthrough hit. He also founded the Latin rap supergroup Latin Alliance and continued his run of hits with the album East Side Story (1992) before going on to sign with Eazy-E’s Ruthless records in 1995.

The current lot, a poster for the Fiesta de Verano Concierto in August of 1990, features Ace, Kid Frost, The Klock, and R&B group The U Crew. The early 1990s would see an explosion in the popularity of west coast gangsta rap and the idealization of the southern California lifestyle, of which two of these artists, in which Ace and Frost would play vital roles.
