Description
Two Berlin (K.P.M.) rectangular plaques, second half of the 19th century
Painted in the studio of Franz Xaver Thallmaier, Munich with scenes after Gerrit Dou, the first with two figures in an arch, one with a herring seller, the sill of the arch inscribed G Douw f 1651, signed FX Tallmaier München to the lower edge, the other with a Poulterer's Shop
impressed sceptre and KPM marks, impressed and incised numerals and letters, decorator's studio paper label to the second plaque
ebonised ripple-moulded frames
25.5 cm. x 19.5 cm.

The original painting of the Poulterer's Shop is in the National Gallery, London, it is dated 1651 and the figure of the older lady appears in works of the late 1640s and 1650s, it may, however be a later work.
The original version of the Herring Seller, painted in about 1670, is now in private hands was formerly in the collection of Count Lothar Franz von Schönborn until sold in 1876.
