The two incense burners are generally in good condition. One of the dragon handles' right paw is consolidated with a metal bracket. Both bases are pierced, and one is patched up. There is some pitting and minor dents as well as some minor infills to the enamels, all consistent with age and the type. Both covers' finials have some old repairs. The elephant head feet are a little loose.

This rare pair of cloisonné incense burner is unusual for its composite decoration of archaistic dragons on the handles, and 'elephant' feet. Elephant heads supporting the body and used as the feet on censers is reminiscent of Ming dynasty censers; for example see a incense burner attributed to Jingtai's reign, illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 3, with a domed openwork cover that may have also inspired the design of the present cover.
