Property from a Belgian Private Collection

A Fragmentary Roman Torso of Apollo or Dionysos

circa 2nd Century A.D.

his long wavy hair falling delicately in twin voluted curls over each shoulder and in a long flaring plait of voluted curls over the nape of the neck and upper back; no restorations.

Height 32 cm.

private collection, Southern France
Galerie Chenel, Paris
acquired by the present owner from the above in 2002

The long strains of hair suggest that this fragment comes from a statue of Apollo or Dionysos. The rendering of the hair is stylistically close to that of a torso in the Villa Albani: P. Bol, ed., Forschungen zur Villa Albani. Katalog der antiken Bildwerke, vol. 4, 1994, pp. 360ff., no. 507, pl. 204f (https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/6290490). This torso as well as the present one are probably from Roman statues copying Greek originals of the mid 5th Century B.C.
