The pierced stem, with hollowed roundels along the stem of the tazza, vaguely resembles the classic 'bi' disc, a symbolic shape also found amongst carved jades in the contemporary period. These were further accentuated with the triangular openings at the corner. Together they form an intricate reticulated design giving texture and sophistication to the tazza stem. Compare a similar example illustrated in Xu Xiaodong and Yan Yalin (ed.), Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. The important archaeological report of Zhejiang, Beijing, 1999, pl. 97.
