This wheel-turned vessel has two lug handles applied to the rim, a form classic of the Liangzhu culture although exist in minor variations. The thin wall of the jar and simplicity of form are reminiscent of the Longshan 'eggshell' pottery stemcups, although Liangzhu wares are typically made of pale grey clay.

Such examples are usually undecorated, as seen on a similar example from the Meiyintang collection, illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol. III, London, 2006, no. 1072. Compare also an example decorated with raised fillets, illustrated in Jinshan Museum (ed.), Fascinating Charm of Ancient Pottery: Exquisite Pottery of Jinshan Museum, Shanghai, 2015, p. 203.
