Oblong 16mo (89 x 111mm.), engraved title-page, 3 engraved leaves of text, engraved tree of the Jesuits, folding engraved world map, 40 engraved maps (not bound in order), all with hand-colouring, contemporary calf, flat spine gilt, occasional light staining, binding slightly rubbed, upper joint starting to crack


THE FIRST JESUIT ATLAS. A charming small format world atlas, based on the cartographical researches of Jesuit missionaries from around the world. It was reissued in 1826, following the re-establishment of the Jesuit order after its suppression in the late eighteenth century.
