An iron Kabuto [helmet]

Muromachi period, 16th century 


the iron bowl with five-stage copper-gilt tehen kanamono, fitted with copper-gilt fukurin and igaki pierced with boar's eye, the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with gilt myoga mon and leather, the mabisashi [peak] decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a black ground with cranes among clouds, 17th century, the hari-date inscribed Tensho Daijingu, the black lacquer shikoro [neck guard] of five tiers with spaced lacing in dark blue braid

The bowl to peak: 31 cm., 12¼ in.

The shikoro to peak: 36.5 cm., 14⅜ in.
