This painting is associated with Jean Véber's masterpiece, Man with Dolls (fig. 1, sale Sotheby's Paris, 26 June 2019, lot 186).
Jean Véber, the famous illustrator and caricaturist, was also an original painter, whose art has an idiosyncratic character that often eludes the criteria of his time.
One of his masterpieces, The Doll Man (private collection) is a strange composition, in which the painter explores a man's obsession for his doll collection, which leads him to ignore the sensual nude woman stretched out languorously at his side. Véber presents the viewer with a hallucinatory and unreal vision of madness, in an atmosphere that is both oppressive and exultant.
The large composition was exhibited at the 1896 Salon and had some success, resulting in a novella that was illustrated by Véber himself. The painter must have been aware of the success of his work, since in the same year he produced this charming little oil on panel, which revisits – unless it was a preparatory study? – the detail of the nude woman stretched out and surrounded by dolls.

Jean Véber, le célèbre illustrateur et caricaturiste, fut également un peintre original, dont l'art échappe souvent aux critères de son temps par son caractère décalé.
L'un de ses chefs-d'œuvre, L'homme aux poupées (collection privée) est une composition étrange, dans laquelle le peintre met en scène l'obsession d'un homme pour sa collection de poupées, négligeant la sensuelle femme nue qui s'étend langoureusement à ses côtés. Véber offre ainsi au spectateur sa vision hallucinée et irréelle de la folie, dans un climat à la fois oppressant et jubilatoire.
La composition en grand fut exposée au Salon de 1896 et connût par la suite un certain succès, étant déclinée en une nouvelle que Véber devait de nouveau illustrer. Le peintre devait lui-même avoir conscience de la réussite de son œuvre, car la même année, il exécuta cette charmante petite huile sur panneau, qui reprend – à moins qu'elle ne prépare ? – le détail de la femme nue allongée et entourée de poupées.
