Albert Besnard can be recognised by his daring palette and vibrant brushstroke, and here presents the portrait of a young woman whose red hair merges with the flaming colours of sunset. This image is characteristic of the artist’s oeuvre, in which women represent the central theme, typifying his particular focus on sensuality, conveyed through gesture, lustrous hair and skin tones. Without ever subscribing to a specific movement, Besnard was able to draw lessons from the various currents on the fringes of academic painting, notably Les Nabis, in order to bring a modern perspective to the art of portraiture.
____________________________________________
