Raymond Balze

Raymond Balze and his brother have long been known for the work they undertook together making copies of the Raphael frescoes in the Vatican, commissioned by Ingres. The work of the two artists is nevertheless quite distinct: while his brother Paul turned to the decorative arts, Raymond’s production was focused on large religious canvases. Influenced by the painting of the Renaissance, an admirer and worthy follower of Ingres, his works have a purist aesthetic: this fine Virgin and Child is a magnificent example.

Raymond Balze a longtemps partagé avec son frère une notoriété méritée grâce à leur travail commun de copies des fresques de Raphaël au Vatican réalisées sur la demande d’Ingres. Le travail des deux frères est pourtant bien distinct : alors que son frère Paul se tourna vers les arts décoratifs, Raymond se consacra à la réalisation de grandes toiles religieuses. Influencé par la peinture de la Renaissance, admiratif et digne émule d’Ingres, il réalise des œuvres dans une esthétique puriste dont cette belle Vierge à l’Enfant est un magnifique exemple.
