Venetian School, 17th Century, Venus and Cupid | Ecole vénitienne du XVIIe siècle, Vénus et Cupidon

While the model for this sculptural Venus is to be found in Raphael and his Venus removing a thorn from her foot (known from Marco da Ravenna’s engraving of the master’s work), the brushstroke and the golden tones of the flesh and hair are more suggestive of Venetian art, or may even be the work of a Flemish or French artist (Blanchard ?) who passed through Venice at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Si le modèle de cette sculpturale Vénus est à chercher du côté de Raphaël et de sa Vénus se retirant une épine du pied (œuvre connue par la gravure de Marco da Ravenna faite d’après le maître), le traitement du pinceau, le coloris blond des chairs et des cheveux rappellent plutôt l’art vénitien, ou même un peintre étranger, flamand ou français (Blanchard ?), étant passé par Venise au tournant des XVIe et XVIIe siècles.
